About

Stroke continues to disrupt lives and rob families of their loved ones, as more and more people are coming to realize. Two of the beautiful souls featured in this book have since departed, and this new edition is dedicated to their memory. Of late, I’ve had a few health scares myself, and each time I would just wish that I could go as beautifully as they did. Anyway, as long as I’m still alive, I hope to keep spreading the word that we need to be prepared for the worst and then be strong enough to overcome when it happens. That is what this book is about, and its mission will only be accomplished once everyone has read it.

“A refreshingly candid look into the experiences of stroke survivors, Emerging From the Dark is both informative and inspiring. Powerful and unabashed in its comprehensive overview of what people might face, this is a book for anyone who is struggling after a stroke and needs some inspiration, as well as for caregivers and family members who wish to better understand one of the most life-changing health conditions.” Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★

Emerging From the Dark...Stroke...The Untold Stories is an unusual book on several counts. Its format is full of artistic creation vastly different from a typical book. Splashed on practically every page are unique, diverse illustrations from the author, and the typeface of text varies a number of times, sometimes simply etched out in pen by the author.

While some pages have complete narratives, others provide isolated thoughts and “free form” ideas to advance the impact. The subjects are not professional authors, so their comments might appear raw but indeed very real. Even Ang himself sprinkles thoughts and emotions generously throughout the interviews, helping to frame the situations and their accompanying confusion.

It’s hard to imagine what the subjects have gone through. Ang’s work truly brings out their fears and frustrations. But it also conveys a sense of purpose to recalibrate lives, be productive, fit in and find inner peace.

So many people remain in the dark about this all-too-common medical condition. Ang hopes his work can serve as a powerful tool for emotional recovery and inspiration for readers as well as the book’s fellow contributors.
“Through this book,” says Ang, “we hope to make a difference — so people can see that no one needs to be alone in their struggles to navigate everyday life after experiencing a stroke. Strokes impact countless lives, taking cherished ones from us. This book also pays tribute to two beautiful souls who’ve since left us. I’ve had my share of health scares, yearning to leave as gracefully as they did. My mission is to stress readiness for life’s challenges and the resilience to surmount them. This book embodies that message, hoping to reach everyone with its key lesson.”

Emerging from the Dark, has garnered a plethora of esteemed awards, including the illustrious Firebird Book Award for 2023, a top honor in the Non-Fiction category at the Hollywood Book Festival, and a coveted prize in the Short Stories category of the Global Book Awards. In addition to these accolades, the work has been named as a finalist for an array of distinguished recognitions, such as the Book of the Year Awards in the True Story category, the Global Book Awards for Non-Fiction, the Paris Book Festival in the Biography/Autobiography section, and the transformational memoirs category at the BookFest Book Awards.

In "Emerging from the Dark: Stroke...The Untold Stories," by Terence Ang readers will learn the realities of the afterlife of stroke survivors. This book was written in both a creative and visible way to allow others to grasp an idea on what a stroke survivor has to deal with for the remainder of their lives. Some pages are illustrated with written text that can appear a bit challenging to read, which is an example of an effect on someone's writing after a severe stroke. It is very unfortunate that so many people have experienced a stroke because it is unavoidable and can happen to anyone at any age. Strokes are scary simply because no one knows if it would ever happen to them, no matter how well someone takes care of their health, by eating the right foods, staying active, drinking their water, etc. Strokes are non-discriminative. In the author's situation, he had been taking reasonably good care of himself, then one day he experienced something that ended up altering his life forever. Diagnosed with Aphasia, which is considerable brain damage that doesn't allow the individual the ability to understand or express their speech. The readers will experience reading the new changes to his writing abilities throughout this book.

I am truly empathetic to the individuals and each of their stories on the moment or day their lives changed drastically. As someone who have family members that have experienced a stroke or two in their lives, I'm grateful that they appear with all of their senses as if nothing happened. It is heartbreaking to know that many others didn't get that kind of fate, who must depend on others for basic needs that they were able to do independently at one point or another. To read about numerous individuals explain from their perspective what happened to them is like living a constant nightmare. They are alive, yes, but they have dark moments where they cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. Life has become a daily fight for normalcy, as they struggle with needing a support system to ensure they feel accomplished on completing the simplest tasks most of us take for granted. Tasks like pronunciation, writing, dressing, tying shoelaces, or driving, are now some of the high hurdles they must now climb.

This book is an eye opener, stories shared from the perspectives of individuals living the aftermath possible realities of experiencing a severe stroke. Learning something new about the body will always be fascinating to me, and I hope one day we can scientifically figure out ways millions of people could avoid experiencing a stroke in their lives. To better understand what could potentially affect someone's life post-stroke I highly recommend this book to others.

A very touching book.

The book's simple yet meaningful illustrations, reminiscent of relaxing doodles or college sketches, add a unique and therapeutic quality, aiding in motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

The book's morning mantra resonated with me, as it speaks to anyone facing adversity, including those struggling with depression or anxiety making this a relatable and encouraging read. A particularly impactful illustration is of never-ending stairs, symbolizing the patience required in achieving long-term goals, a lesson valuable for anyone facing delays in reaching their objectives.

The section Chat with Kelvin was exceptionally moving. Kelvin's story as a stroke survivor who turned full-time fitness trainer is a testament to resilience and defying expectations. I have been following Terence Ang’s writing for a while now. I have read his, A Cry in the Dark, and Emerging from the Dark, all of which I found to be so pulling, empathetic, and absorbingly compelling. So, picking up “Emerging from the Dark: Stroke… The Untold Stories” was captivating to me. As someone who has once taken care of a bedridden father who had to be wheeled to bathe, fed, and helped with literary everything, I can relate to how frustrating and sad these survivors felt, and I can also relate to the burden and mental stress that comes with taking care of sick people.

Emerging from the Dark: The Untold Story is a compilation of short stories, chats, and conversations from stroke survivors. Many of these were told from the perception of the survivors themselves and others were written from the perception of their caregiver with many explaining how they felt or what their life was like before the stroke incident, compared to what life looked like during the period of battling stroke.

From the perception of Wei Nei, Kelvin, and JT to the perception of Chandhan, Yizhen, Jane, Hisham, and his wife, Annie. They all talked about their coping mechanics, the activities that keep them hopeful, and the place of friendship and family support among many other things. Others talked about how stroke impacted their work ethics, the depressive feeling of low self-esteem, the fact of having to be monitored intermittently over a simple task, and many more.

Reading the different survivors talk about their lives before the stroke incident comes across as overly emotional for me. I can feel the pain associated with having to start life based on an unexpected occurrence. Excerpts like, “…Everything was put on the back burner when I got my stroke, and I never would have imagined that it would become my life…” were so hard to take in. I felt for Chandhan who had his stroke at thirty. It was touching to know how Aini feels about the sudden outturn of Hisham’s health, and how friends helped Wei Nei among many other interesting stories. I also liked that the book contains some quotes that I found to be wise and profound.

There is a lot contained in this anthology, many of which I consider would serve as a source of hope to anyone currently battling stroke. It will also serve as a source of hope and encouragement to caretakers, especially family caretakers, and enlighten them on what to do to ease the pain and the mental stress associated with this health condition. Stephen Ang did a commendable job with Emerging from the Dark and I highly recommend it.

Author Terence Ang’s books are uniquely captivating. After suffering a stroke, Ang had to relearn many skills he took for granted, such as speaking, writing, and drawing. Through his rehabilitation and journey back to his new normal he began to share his story. First, in his book “A Cry In The Dark: A Stroke Survivor’s Story of Hope and Recovery,” then through “Emerging From the Dark: Wish I Knew About This,” and now in this “Emerging From the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories.”

Each of Ang’s books are an experience in themselves. Written by his hand and accompanied by drawings, pictures, doodles, and phrases. Showing off his stroke progress through his penmanship and illustrations, while also sharing the stories and experiences of others, “Emerging From the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories” is a powerful read. Interspersed with moving quotations, relatable motivations, and stories from other stroke survivors and caregivers, this book is extraordinary.

There were many things these stories had in common, from no one expecting this to happen to them, to the discomfort with having to lean on others for support, especially in tasks they’d taken for granted. This is an eye-opening read. Seeing into the minds of both Terence Ang and those he chose to highlight within. End capped with supporting words from medical acquaintances and those he’s met through his ongoing work with the Singapore National Stroke Association. This book shows, on full display, the power of Ang’s words, pictures, and influence since undergoing recovery of his own stroke.

Reading “Emerging From the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories” is a powerful experience. Each of Ang’s book’s spark a new sense of understanding of his and others’ stroke stories. Readers will emerge with a new understanding, sense of compassion and empathy, as well as a sense of enjoyment through Ang’s drawings and insights.

Strokes are serious conditions which often times appear to swoop in and damage an individual without reason. There are various outcomes and side effects that those who experience strokes are subjected to, provided they survive the encounter. Terence Ang shares his experience with his own stroke in his book: Emerging from the Dark: Stroke. The Untold Stories. It is not just his experience he shares, but the updated version of his book pays homage to two individuals he references who have passed since first publication. This book is deeply personal, yet because it is so personal it makes it that much more accessible to readers. This is a primarily first-hand account of what is like to experience a stroke and the aftereffects.
Ang doesn’t hold back in sharing his experience with his stroke in this book. The layout and content read much like a diary and the pages are splashed with images both positive and dark. This unapologetically human sharing of the changes, the darkness and the inevitable light from his experience lends more authenticity to this book than if it were written by a famous medical professional. The language is inherently accessible: it is the story of one human to another. One average individual and the experiences they had in relation to this potentially life-altering event. The firsthand experience of other stroke survivors is also included.
Accolades must be given to the designer of this book: the colours and contrasts are eye-catching and the slightly sketchy font, while at times a bit difficult to read, are so unexpected from a book that it draws the reader in more. This is a book you want to read in colour: this is a book you might even want to read in a physical copy to get that true experience.
An installation in perhaps an unexpected series, Emerging from the Dark: Stroke. The Untold Stories by Terence Ang is his third book where he discusses his experience with his own stroke and how it impacted his life. This raw, human description of how jarring this medical condition can be; how potentially debilitating it can be. Ang is open and honest about the darkness as well as the light. He shares his unique experience while also sharing the experiences of others. It’s easy to connect to the story he is telling and there is a sense of connection between the reader and Ang upon completion. Almost like you are gaining a new friend that you are embarking on this journey with.

Labeling Emerging From the Dark: Stroke. The Untold Stories by Terence Ang merely as a book doesn't do it justice. This work, with its inventive structure, raw honesty, and at times chaotic narrative, is more accurately described as a diary. In it, Ang grapples with life after experiencing a stroke. I believe that the more people who read this deeply personal account, the better, as it offers valuable insights into resilience and recovery. Terence Ang bares his soul and allows the reader to have a glance at the most personal and vulnerable parts of after-stroke life. Some pages of the diary contain Ang’s analysis of how the stoke has changed his life, alongside with providing encouraging moral that there is also a light in in the other end of the tunnel, some pages consist of incredibly artistic drawings and then there are some very dark pages where the author openly expressing feeling frustrated and depressed, so showing that accepting such lifechanging condition as a stroke is not a straight-forward process. There always be good and bad days, and regardless of how you are feeling right now, your feelings are valid and normal. Emerging From the Dark: Stroke. The Untold by Stories touches a lot on the topic of feeling left out and the frustration of not having anyone who can actually understand and relate. And that is exactly why I find it absolutely beautiful that Ang has included the stories of other stroke survivors, so again emphasising the idea that you are actually not alone, there are others out there who can relate and who can support you. I also admire the fact that the author chose to include the stories of the carers as this group of people is usually left out of the equation, yet their lives are being impacted and they are often feeling as isolated and frustrated and definitely should receive more praise and most importantly support.

This is an absolutely amazing book that I genuinely recommend to everyone, especially to those who need a reminder that regardless of your circumstances, your feelings are valid.

This is such a unique idea, in my opinion, and it's executed brilliantly! The incredible illustrations really make this book stand out on their own, but the stories included are hard-hitting and emotional, too.
