LIVE IN TIMES SQUARE, NEW YORK! 🇸🇬🗽
From losing my voice after stroke… to seeing my story light up Times Square.
I still find it hard to believe.
Brokenness Becomes Beautiful: Inspiring Pieces of Poetry — the 2026 NYC Big Book Award WINNER for Audiobook: Poetry/Memoir — is now being celebrated on a billboard in New York City’s Times Square.
And for this to happen in October, the month of World Stroke Day, makes the moment even more meaningful to me.
#World Stroke Day is on 29 October. Six years after my haemorrhagic stroke, I am standing in a very different place in my journey.
I once struggled to find words.
Today, those words have travelled from Singapore to New York.
Living with aphasia meant that narrating my poetry in the conventional way was extremely difficult. Through AI voice technology, I was able to bring my words to life using a digital recreation of my own voice — in a project believed to be a world first for an author living with aphasia narrating his own poetry audiobook through an AI-cloned version of his voice.
And now that voice is being heard in Times Square.
This is more than a billboard.
It is more than an award.
For me, it represents every moment when I could not find a word. Every difficult step in recovery. Every person who waited patiently for me to speak. And every stroke survivor or person living with aphasia who may sometimes wonder whether their voice still matters.
It does.
To receive this recognition during the same month as World Stroke Day makes this milestone especially powerful for me.
I am proud to carry a little piece of Singapore 🇸🇬 onto one of the biggest stages in the world.
From stroke.
From aphasia.
From silence.
To poetry.
To an audiobook.
To an international award.
To TIMES SQUARE.Aphasia changed my voice. It did not silence me.
This October, as we mark World Stroke Day, I hope this moment can remind others that life after stroke can still hold purpose, creativity, possibility and beauty.
What is broken can still become something beautiful.
Thank you to everyone who has walked this journey with me. ❤️
